What is the meaning of Quran?
The Quran simply means “The Recitation”.
What does it contain?
It is a source of continued guidance for humanity. Some of the topics covered in the Quran include monotheism and attributes of Allah, stories of the previous Prophets, their miracles and their message of monotheism, solutions for humanity for problems (such as poverty, breakdown of the family), and about the life after death.
Quran is also called Al Furqan:
“Al Furqan” which means “The Criterion” which stands as a decisive factor between good and bad.
It is a book not just for Muslims or believers but for the whole man kind. It has 114 chapters.
It was revealed in a span of 23 years according to the requirements.
Al-Qur’an was given to Prophet Muhammad [SWS] more than 1400 years ago from Allah by Angel Gabriel (AS). Allah says...
Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing. ~Surah Al- Ahzab 33:40
Why was Quran revealed in Arabic language?
The mother tongue of our beloved Prophet [SWS] was Arabic.
Allah had sent scriptures to previous generations too like Zaboor to Dawood (AS), Torah to Moses (AS), Injeel to Jesus (AS) in the respective language of the Prophets. But they have not been preserved in their original form. The Quran has been preserved as it is. This is the mercy of Allah [SWT] on us. Alhamdulilah.
Allah says…
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian. ~Surah Hijr 15:9
and also says...
Indeed, it is a noble Qur'an. In a Register well-protected; None touch it except the purified. (Mutah’ hireen – those who are pure. This purity refers to Angels. The original tablet is well preserved in Lauh al mahfooz in heaven). [It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds. ~Surah Waqiya 56:77-80
But this is an honored Qur'an. [Inscribed] in a Preserved Slate. The Quran is preserved in the ‘lawh al-mahfooz’ (preserved tablet) with Allah.~ Surah Al Buruj 85:21-22
And indeed, it is a mighty Book. Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy.~ Surah Fussilat 41:41-42
The Quran that we have in our hands, is also referred by Arabs as "The mus’haf" which means the written/printed copy of the original Quran. The original tablet (The Quran) is in Lauh al mahfooz in heaven.
How Allah [SWT] preserves this book?
Qur’an is the only book that is learned by heart. If anyone were to burn all the Qur’ans of the world at a time, Naozubillah (We seek refuge with Allah), there will come people who will dictate to write this book word to word, letter to letter. SubhanAllah. In this way Al Qur’an is preserved. Every Muslim (at least majority of them) memorizes at least part of the Quran. SubhanAllah.
Allah challenges the disbelievers in the following verse:
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ~Surah Baqarah 2:23
Allah the Almighty says about His Book:
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction. ~Surah Nisa 4:82
Understanding and memorizing Al Quran:
Allah says…
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for understanding and remembrance, so is there any who will remember(memorize)? ~ Surah Al Qamar 54:17
Best is to recite a bit of Quran with understanding, on a daily basis. If we do not understand the meaning, we would not be able to draw the lessons/guidance from it.
Comment your one favorite Ayah from the whole Quran with Surah name and verse number below in the comment section. You could choose from above verses also.
Quote from the Holy Quran, Al-Baqara (2:153) يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo istaAAeenoo bialssabri waalssalati inna Allaha maAAa alssabireena O ye who believe! Surah An Nasr ..ayah No.3
Surah Rahman is the Surah whose meaning I am aware of, so my favorite ayat based on the meaning is
هَلْ جَزَاءُ الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الْإِحْسَانُ - 55:60
hal jaza ul-ih'sani illal-ih'saan
Is the reward for good [anything] but good?
The ayat which is very pleasant to hear is the one with the names of many prophets, I am not sure in which Surah it is.
Kun faya kun - be and it is.
Surah baqrah
